Thin Edge of the Wedge

When is a friendship over
When fists start flying
Or is it with the first words of gossip

When does a child rebel
When he shouts at his parents to leave him alone
Or is it the first time his Mom and Dad neglect him

When is a marriage over
When it lands in the divorce courts
Or the first time couples disagree with each other

When does a business become disgraced
When someone sues them for malpractice
Or the first time a shabby job is allowed

When does a government become corrupt
When the people march in and take over
Or the first time a motion is hidden from the public

When does a Church fall from grace
When the world hears about cardinal sins
Or the first time compromise is accepted

So many times we think we can get away with the small things
Maybe it’s not the first time, but left unchecked
Like innocent bits of dirt in a home, it soon turns to filth
